Lewiston's second-largest health care provider, St. Mary's Health System, has hired Melissa Caccamo as vice president of practice operations.

“I look forward to partnering with Melissa to improve our strategic planning and business development efforts,” said Cindy Segar-Miller, president of St. Mary’s Health System and senior vice president of the system's parent, Covenant Health.

“Our goal is to proactively address the evolving and diverse care needs of the community we serve while also growing our market share. I’m confident our focus on each of these areas will help us remain an efficient and progressive health system.”

Covenant Health, which is based in Andover, Mass., is a Catholic regional health care system with three acute hospitals, 10 skilled nursing facilities and four assisted living facilities. The nonprofit has more than 5,000 employees.

Caccamo joins St. Mary’s with 20 years of health care management experience. Prior to joining Covenant Health, she spent nearly 15 years at Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston, in roles including vice president of medical group operation and innovation, vice president of primary care, medical specialties and cardiovascular services, and system director of ambulatory and retail services. Caccamo is also a certified medical practice executive.

“By harnessing her extensive experience maintaining efficient operations within medical practices, we will be more prepared than ever to meet the Lewiston community’s changing health care needs,” said John Emerson, senior vice president of provider enterprise for Covenant Health.

Caccamo received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from Clarion University in Clarion, Pa.

Founded in 1888, what is now St. Mary's was the first hospital in Lewiston-Auburn and the first Catholic hospital in Maine. St. Mary's Health System currently employs 990 people and comprises the regional medical center on Campus Avenue, near Bates College, as well as offices, labs and clinics across Lewiston and Auburn.

The medical center is the fourth-largest hospital in the state, according to the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on the number of acute care beds. St. Mary’s has 233.
