Pratt & Whitney

Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick

Pratt & Whitney, of North Berwick, Maine, is a division of United Technologies and a leading designer and manufacturer of jet engines for military, commercial and private aircraft markets. Pratt & Whitney's PW 4098 was the launch engine on the Boeing 777, the newest wide body aircraft. Pratt & Whitney is currently developing the F-119 engine for the F-22 advanced Tactical Fighter. The F-119 will serve as the derivative engine for Pratt & Whitney’s entry in the multiservice Joint Strike Fighter competition. Pratt & Whitney is also in the final phase of development of the PW 6000 engine to power the (90) passenger regional jets, which show promise of being extremely popular with airline operators.

Why Pratt & Whitney chose Maine:

Pratt & Whitney began its manufacturing operations in Maine in 1979 as a result of the need to increase manufacturing capacity. Maine was selected over locations in other states because of the work ethic and availability of its workforce, the presence of a developed plant site and the cooperation and assistance of the executive and legislative branches of state government in developing training programs for the newly hired Pratt & Whitney employees.
